Why do we sweat?

Every day, our bodies use perspiration to maintain constant internal temperature. This is regulated by the sympathetic nervous system, which controls the five million sweat glands in your body. About half of those glands are located in the hands. In the chest, there are branches of the sympathetic chain that control sweating hands. These chains can be interrupted to stop the sweating of the hands, the feet and armpits are also improved. Procedure is minimally invasive outpatient procedure – Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy. Excessive Sweating

What is hyperhydrosis

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is caused by malfunctioning of the sympathetic nervous system or disorders of the sweat glands, characterized by abnormally increased perspiration, in excess of that required for regulation of body temperature. Some patients experience a distinct reduction in the quality of life. They feel at a loss of control because perspiration takes place independent of temperature and emotional state. However, anxiety can exacerbate the situation for many sufferers. A common complaint of patients is that they get nervous because they sweat, then sweat because they are nervous.

Excessive sweating can either be generalized or localized to specific parts of the body. Hands, feet, axillae, and the groin area are among the most active regions. Primary hyperhidrosis usually starts in childhood and may increase during adolescence It seems to be genetic. Facial blushing is associated with sweating in 10% of sufferrers.

Excess Sweating affects your life

When perspiration in the armpits is excessive, the condition is often a debilitating disorder that can affect one’s work and life professionally as well as personally. Self esteem is affected, causing the person to feel isolated and withdrawn.

Excessive sweating affects many routine activities. Things like driving, taking tests and simply grasping objects are severely hampered by sweaty hands. In addition, many careers present challenges for excessive sweating sufferers, such as for cook/chefs, doctors, and people working with computers. However, it is the social embarassment that most excessive sweating sufferers find most troubling.

Some sufferers avoid situations where they will come into physical contact with others. Interviews, a common source of anxiety for many people, are particularly harrowing for excessive sweating patients. Sadly, it is the handshake before and after the interview that they will be stressing most about.

Treatments

Injections

This excessive sweating can be controlled by prescription antiperspirants, pills, neuromodulator injections, scraping of the glands or excision of the affected skin. The procedures are well tolerated as they are performed under local anesthesia. 90% improvement of axillary sweating can be expected.

Surgery

For patients with hand sweating, the most effective and curative procedure is Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy. This outpatient procedure is done under general anesthesia, and it involves dividing the hyperactive nerve, responsible for inappropriate excessive sweating.

Our surgery center specializes in the minimally invasive control of hyperhidrosis. The doctors and our staff are highly qualified, dedicated, and caring professionals who consider it a privilege to provide medical care.
